The Guardian (Intelligence Unit #2) by Kimberly Kincaid

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A hot introverted cop and an adorable quirky numbers nerd come together to take down the mafia baddie in this suspenseful sexy romance. Matteo is married to his career – that’s it. No time for any romance having been burned by his ex who demanded he back off on his 24/7 detective job. Delia sees numbers in color. She is the VP of Finance for a big-time acquisitions company and she stumbles across something funky going on with the financials. As she starts poking around in the anomalies of cash going in and out, she ends up getting mugged. Coincidence? Her bestie’s big brother cop comes to the rescue and Delia has been crushing on him for years.

Matteo has never noticed how beautiful his little sister’s BFF is and now he cannot get her out of his head. While he is working on a cold case involving the Bianchi crime family, Delia walks into his office and connects the bad guy on their crime board to the numbers crunching her financial mind. I was literally on the edge of my seat as she approached the board and said, “how do you know Nick?” The Intelligence unit connects the dots to Delia’s mugging and decides she needs to go into protective custody. Mr. Grumpy Pants Matteo volunteers to be her Guardian even though he vows to keep her in the friend zone. You know what happens when Matteo and Delia are holed up in such close quarters – yep, some hot sexy times.

This is a super twisty suspenseful drama where you never really know what is going to happen next. In fact, the surprise bad guy in the end was a total switch from who I was absolutely expecting to be the kingpin’s accomplice. Ms. Kincaid has a knack for the cop/firefighter/doctor suspenseful romance, and she does not disappoint with The Guardian. There are several cameos from her past series and the hero and heroine from The Rookie play side roles in this story. You do not need to have read any of those to enjoy this book as a standalone – (but it is always more fun to know all these fabulous characters’ back stories.) Enjoy!
