Perfect Chaos by Jodi Ellen Malpas
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Right off the bat our hero is an egotistical jerk. I know they are always gorgeous, well built, yada, yada, yada. But Ty is over the top full of himself and his clothes, and his perfect stubble and his perfect man-whoring ways. This story is in his POV so it makes sense that he preens and internally talks about how he’s God’s gift to women. Halfway thru the story he does “kind of” win me over – as he focuses more on his target of obsession, Lainey (an employee, another part of his dilemma.) Probably more because I feel bad for him.
It’s Lainey that kicked my view of the story down a big notch. Her extra-curricular activities seemed almost worse than Ty throughout the whole story and the fact that I truly didn’t trust her – even at the end – basically soured the book for me. Don’t get me wrong. If you’re into are some crazy, steamy, sexy, scenes – this will be your cup of tea. Pretty typical for Malpas to write. (I was torn on her “This Man” series – loved it, hated it, overwhelmed by it in the end.) But I know that a lot of people LOVED that series – so this troupe is in that vein. Super-fast turn arounds and lots of they’re together, they’re not, they’re back.
What I did like: Ty’s fun banter and trust with his personal assistant, Gina. She was a hoot! And Ty’s relationship with his mum was adorable, too. The wedding party alone was one of the best parts of the book – I actually liked Lainey during that scene. The “Perfect Chaos” back and forth was actually quite sweet between the two main characters.
There was a pretty big twist near the end I never saw coming and Malpas did solve Lainey’s strange outside employment “satisfactorily”. That was really my conundrum while reading 95% of the book. I kept thinking what could she possibly be doing? Ugh! Probably the author’s goal – genius – but too much, really.
So that is where my 3.5 stars comes from – annoying heroine. You really end up liking the egomaniac in the end – but you are exhausted getting there.
