Elves with Benefits by Jana Aston
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Ho! Ho! Ho! It’s another romp in the snow with our Reindeer Falls friends just in time for the festive season. Jana Aston’s holiday novellas are a hoot and just what we need to get the merry LOLs with a side of naughty.
Elves with Benefits begins this year’s Reindeer Falls series with Maggie and Ryan. Maggie is an overdramatic “Holiday Enforcement Officer” for the town, and she takes her job very seriously. Being a major connoisseur of Christmas, an all 12 months of the year variety, she is consumed with making sure that all the houses on Candy Cane Lane are up to snuff in their decoration displays.
Ryan has traveled back to his hometown with his brothers to clear out his late Uncle Joe’s house he inherited and get it sold. He is a hotshot architect just trying to get in and out of this crazy over holidazed town and back to Chicago. Enter his first “run-in with the law” via a cute red-headed Christmas cop, Maggie.
Maggie and Ryan’s back and forth bickering over his lack of Christmas decorating dedication is hilarious! Our “deranged” Christmas elf is utterly invested in all the holiday cheeriness – including rocking Mariah Carey – full blast on an endless loop in her car. Ryan starts warming up to Maggie, accelerating to some sexy times “instalove” as in most novella timelines.
Aston sets up some of the side characters for her upcoming Reindeer Falls stories with bits of nuggets on Ryan’s brothers (Jake and Carter) hooking up with Maggie’s book club besties (Sutton and Lexi). She also name drops some of last year’s series ala’ Noel, Holly and Ginger’s Reindeer Falls locales featured in Ryan and Maggie’s day trip around town. While “Elves with Benefits” is part of the overall series, it is super sweet as a standalone quick read. Merry Christmas Y’all!
